Disability Insurance

Disability insurance, also known as disability income insurance or income protection, is a type of insurance that helps replace a portion of a person's income if they are unable to work due to illness or injury.

Disability insurance can provide benefits for a period of time ranging from three months to retirement age. The two main types of disability insurance are short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD). The main differences between the two types of policies are the length of the benefit period and the level of coverage.

Disability insurance can offer several advantages over Social Security Disability insurance, including:

  • Benefits are not dependent on whether the injury or illness occurred on the job
  • Benefits are usually higher
  • Benefits are paid directly to the policyholder
